Community

The Seed Pods is built on the premise that as a community, we can work together to support seed & food sovereignty.

In biology, community is defined as an interacting group of organisms in a specific location. We are one of those organisms, too, and can work together with plants, animals, and the earth, supporting one another into the future. This has become especially important as we all face the growing challenges of climate change.

The future of food is closely connected with the seeds and plants that grow from them being able to adapt to the changing climate at a much faster rate that has been necessary in the past.

Through seed selection for traits that can be successful in these new and changing environments, as well as maintaining genetic diversity, we can help secure food sovereignty for all.

And here is where urban farmers and gardeners come in

As urban farmers and gardeners, most of us do not depend on the food we raise for our livelihoods. That positions us to be able to experiment and takes risks that may not be possible for most farmers to take. This uniquely positions us to be able to work to develop landraces and varieties that will be adapted to where we live.

As small scale growers however, we might find it hard to maintain enough genetic diversity in our crops due to the limited number of crops we can grow.

However, as we join together with others in our community working on specific growing projects together, and sharing the seed, we can grow together into the future, and maybe eventually have enough seed for others to work with and develop as well.

Together we can change the world.
